Research Seminar – Bryan Talbot

The Use of Style and Storytelling Techniques in The Tale of One Bad Rat

Bryan Talbot has written and drawn underground and alternative comics, notably Brainstorm!, UK and American science fiction and superhero stories such as Judge Dredd, Nemesis the Warlock, Teknophage, The Nazz and Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, DC Vertigo titles including Hellblazer, Sandman, The Dreaming and Fables and the graphic novels for which he is best known: The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Heart of Empire and The Tale of One Bad Rat. His new book, Alice in Sunderland, is published by Jonathan Cape, is out now. He is currently writing Cherubs!, a supernatural comedy-adventure miniseries for Desperado, drawn by Mark Stafford. His first prose book, The Naked Artist, is published in June in the USA by Moonstone.

Archive Research Conferences

ARCHIVE RESEARCH CONFERENCES
Interface, University of Ulster and The School of Art and Design, Media and Culture, University of Sunderland, in association with Locus+ are offering a series of AHRC funded research training events.
INTERACTING WITH THE ARCHIVE – CREATIVE APPROACHES:
22 March 2007 (10am – 5pm) Venue:
The National Glass Centre, Liberty Way, Sunderland
This one-day event will investigate interaction with archives across a range of disciplines (including art, photography, history and curating). It will explore how personal and private collections become archives.
Speakers include: Stuart Brisley, Sophie Spencer-Wood, Val Williams, Marjolaine Ryley and Stuart Howard.
The event will be chaired by Carol McKay.
PER-FORMING THE ARCHIVE: 28 March 2007 (10am – 5pm) Venue:
Culture Lab, Grand Assembly Rooms, King’s Walk, University of Newcastle upon Tyne
This event will centre on current innovative strategies of curating/activating cultural archives,
considering ways of enhancing the present and future potential for creative engagement with archival resources. Speakers include: Anne Bean, Victoria Worsley, Stephen Partridge and Sue Breakell.
The event will be chaired by Stephen Foster.
Participation is free, but places are limited. A limited number of travel bursaries are available to UK based PhD students.

Nick was also tickled to recently see the smallest of still images from his film and video work in the early 1990s with electronic music pioneers Cabaret Voltaire included in ‘VJ: Audio-visual Art and VJ Culture’ by Michael Faulkner, published by Laurence King Publishing at the tail end of last year.(http://www.dfuse.com/)
Nick is currently working on two new collaborations with Tim Howle amongst other projects.
